Ghvardzelashvili's Marani is located in the village of Kondoli in the Tsinandali microzone of Kakheti, eastern Georgia. Giorgi Ghvardzelashvili is a one man operation on a mission to express his love and history in the wine he makes. With just 2 hectares of 40 year old vines, he farms organically, does not till, and intervenes as little as possible in the field. He built his winery by hand after retiring from being a bodyguard for 20 years. Giorgi only makes wine when he is in a good mood because he believes that since wine is a living thing, it soaks up the energy of those who make it. In the cellar, he uses only native yeast fermentation, does not fine, filter, or add any sulfur to his wines.
